30% of the national power generation in Romania comes from hydropower, this is due to more than 400 large dams.
Also, around 60% of the electricity generated within the Danube River Basin in Austria comes from hydropower as well.
Iron Gate I is the most important hydropower plant on the Danube. Along with Iron Gate II, they are located in the transboundary area of Romania and Serbia.
The navigable conditions have improved on the Danube and navigation is possible all year round. Between Belgrade and the Iron Gate II, the Danube is a VII class waterway according to the ECE classification, while upstream it is a Via class waterway.
The Danube Delta is considered Europe’s youngest territory. It consists of three main water channels: Chilia, Sulina and Sf. Gheorghe , numerous canals and floating islands.
This triangularly shaped delta represents the home of many habitats and is also home to over 300 species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish species.
